Tanks and Spills Map
The Tanks and Spills Map is the online map and database in which the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) shows tank sites and spill sites. DANR's Data & Mapping page says visitors can use it to find information on regulated tank sites and on spill sites. DANR's other pages link the same address under several names: the Tanks & Spills Map, the Database of Reported Releases, a searchable database of spills and releases, a searchable database of registered tanks, the Spills/Events Database, and the Tanks, Spills, and Environmental Events map and database.
In a Phase I ESA
No single ASTM record type covers this map. In the South Dakota overview this handbook pairs it with the state leaking storage tank records that ASTM E1527-21 lists as a standard source, as the handbook's own reading: the pages read name no separate list of leaking tanks, DANR's Storage Tanks and Spills Reporting pages link this map under the label Database of Reported Releases, and a tank release is reported to the same DANR line as a spill. The general reading of a leaking tank listing is on the LUST page. Tank registrations are the Storage Tanks page's subject.
Four details shape how to use it.
- It reaches past tanks and spills. DANR's Brownfields page points to this map for every known environmental event, and links it under the label SD Brownfields Site Information. See the Brownfields Program.
- It can carry documents. DANR's Superfund page calls it DANR's online property search and spills database, and says documents for some sites have been placed in it under a DANR ID number. The Superfund page gives a DANR ID number for each site whose documents it says are in the map.
- The spill download has a key. DANR's spill pages link a document titled Tanks and Spills Map Spill download columns defined, which this handbook did not open. Read a downloaded listing against it.
- DANR asks for it before an assessment request. DANR's Environmental Assessment page asks that anyone whose answer sits in its online databases use them instead of asking for an Environmental Assessment.
This handbook did not open the map, so it says nothing about the fields a listing shows, how a case is marked closed, or how current the map is.
Where to look a site up
- The Tanks & Spills Map is linked from DANR's Data & Mapping page and from its tank, spill, brownfields, Superfund and SARA Title III pages.
- To report a spill, DANR gives (605) 773-3296 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time. For tank questions, the storage tank section is on the same line.
Getting the file
DANR's page footer links Request Public Records, an address on the state's sd.gov portal that this handbook did not open. The pages read do not say what a request must include. Where the map carries documents for a site, read those first.
