Superfund sites in Colorado
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) keeps a page of Colorado Superfund sites, sorted into active sites, removal actions, proposed sites and deleted sites, and leads the work at some of them. CDPHE says a site qualifies for the National Priorities List, or Superfund list, when EPA determines there is a release or threatened release of hazardous substances that may endanger public health, welfare or the environment.
In a Phase I ESA
The lists themselves are federal. They are described on the NPL page and the SEMS page. What CDPHE adds is a state view of the sites.
- The page says who leads. CDPHE sorts the sites into five groups: CDPHE-led active sites, CDPHE-led removal actions, EPA-led active sites, proposed sites and deleted sites. For a property near a listed site, the group tells you which agency to ask first.
- Many sites have a CDPHE page. Each CDPHE-led site links to a CDPHE page, and so do some EPA-led and proposed sites. The others link to EPA's own site pages.
- The pages read name no separate state Superfund list. CDPHE describes its own authority over releases of solid and hazardous waste on its environmental cleanup page; see Solid and hazardous waste cleanup.
- Superfund sites are shut out of one closure route. National Priorities List sites and what CDPHE calls NPL-caliber sites are ineligible for conditional closure.
- Federal facilities have their own page. CDPHE's page on hazardous materials at federal facilities lists Department of Defense sites, Formerly Used Defense sites and other federal facility sites with active cleanup, each linked to a CDPHE page.
Two background sources are linked from CDPHE's pages. Its environmental cleanup reports page carries the reports titled History, Status and Long-Term Funding Needs of the Colorado CERCLA Program, for 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2024. Its solid waste data page says solid waste facilities with a certificate of designation and an attendant report their volumes and pay a fee, and that the money collected is split between a fund for Superfund match and the Solid Waste Management Fund.
Where to look a site up
- CDPHE's Superfund sites page lists the sites by group and links an interactive map of Superfund sites.
- The same page links EPA's Region 8 Superfund sites page, EPA's Superfund page and EPA's Cleanups in My Community tool.
- CDPHE's Hazardous materials at federal facilities page lists the federal sites.
Getting the file
For CDPHE's own records on a site, its Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division has an online records search and takes requests through the form on its records review page or at cdphe_cora_hmwmd@state.co.us. The route is described on the records review page. The pages read do not say how CDPHE's file for an EPA-led site differs from EPA's.
