Operating Solid Waste Landfills

Agency Missouri Department of Natural Resources
ASTM search distance 0.5 mile

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources lists the solid waste landfills that are currently permitted to operate in Missouri, with an interactive map of all permitted solid waste landfills and a downloadable list of the permitted facilities. The department defines a solid waste landfill, or disposal area, as any area used to dispose of solid waste from more than one residence or from any commercial, industrial, manufacturing, recreational or governmental operation.

In a Phase I ESA

The department's landfill records are the Missouri form of the state landfill and solid waste disposal site records that ASTM E1527-21 lists as a standard source. The general reading of a landfill listing is on the landfills and solid waste page. This page covers landfills now operating. Landfills that have stopped taking waste are on the Inactive and Closed Solid Waste Landfills page, so a search needs both.

What the record shows

The department sorts operating landfills by type, and each type takes different waste.

  • Sanitary landfills, sometimes called municipal solid waste landfills, are permitted for controlled disposal of household waste and commercial, industrial, agricultural, governmental and institutional wastes similar to household waste. Hazardous waste, waste oil, large amounts of liquids, lead-acid batteries, appliances and brush are among the wastes excluded.
  • Demolition landfills are designed only for demolition waste, construction materials, brush, wood waste, soil, rock, concrete and inert solids.
  • Utility waste landfills take fly ash, bottom ash, slag and flue gas emission control waste mainly from burning coal or other fossil fuels in power plants. The department notes these wastes may contain contaminants such as mercury, cadmium and arsenic.
  • Special waste landfills are designed for one or more special wastes whose physical or chemical characteristics differ from municipal or construction and demolition waste. The department says these are typically non-hazardous industrial wastes, such as incinerator ash or water treatment plant sludge, often disposed of at the place where they were produced.

For each landfill the department's lists give a name, city and county. The department says more about a facility is on its interactive map, and a table listing all solid waste facilities in Missouri opens under the map's "expand" tab. Solid waste processing facilities, such as transfer stations and material recovery facilities, are on a separate list.

Where to look a site up

  • The department's Operating Solid Waste Landfills page, which lists the operating landfills by type.
  • The department's Missouri Solid Waste Management map. The department's page says the link gives access to an interactive map of all permitted solid waste landfills in Missouri and a download of a list of all permitted facilities.
  • The department's Waste Management Program takes questions on a specific landfill, at 573-751-5401 and wmp@dnr.mo.gov.

Getting the file

The pages read do not give a landfill-specific records route. The department's general route is the Sunshine Law request.
