State Superfund Program
The Connecticut State Superfund Program is described on a page of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). DEEP's page, last modified September 1, 2026, says the program provided some funding for remediation of contaminated sites, and lists the hazardous waste disposal sites that it says had been deemed eligible for expenditure of State funds for remedial actions under section 22a-133f of the Connecticut General Statutes.
In a Phase I ESA
The State Superfund list is the Connecticut form of the state Superfund equivalent records that ASTM E1527-21 lists as a standard source. The general reading of a state Superfund listing is on the state Superfund equivalent page. Three Connecticut details shape how to read it.
- The page is a narrative list. Each entry gives a short history of the site, such as how it was used, how pollution was found, any orders or consent orders, and the cleanup work done. DEEP's page does not give a table of site numbers or statuses. Read each entry against the property and its neighbors, and note that the page describes some areas as neighborhoods or groups of properties rather than a single address.
- The wording is in the past tense. DEEP says the program "provided" funding and the sites "had been deemed eligible". The page does not say whether the program still accepts sites, so ask DEEP before relying on the list as current.
- Federal sites are listed elsewhere. DEEP's General Information on Site Clean-up page, last modified August 20, 2026, describes state Superfund sites as hazardous waste sites addressed with State funds and links separate lists for sites addressed with federal funds. It links EPA's National Priorities List and EPA's SEMS (formerly CERCLIS) database, and DEEP's own Federal Superfund Sites in Connecticut page.
Where to look a site up
- DEEP's State Superfund Program page is the list. The page is not a search tool, so scan it for the town or the street name.
- DEEP's Contaminated or Potentially Contaminated Sites list says state remediation sites and federal remediation sites are among its sources.
- DEEP's Records Center page, content last updated July 2024, lists State and Federal Superfund among its Remediation Division files, dated from 1985, and lists a Superfund Sites list in its file review area.
- Remediation and State and Federal Superfund questions go to 860-424-3705, the number that page gives.
Getting the file
The entry tells you a site was on the list. Orders, investigation reports and cleanup records are in the file. DEEP's Records Center page, content last updated July 2024, lists Superfund (State and Federal) files under the Remediation Division. DEEP's Remediation Division Documents page, last modified March 18, 2026, says all Remediation Division files have been removed from the file room and scanned into the DEEP Online Document Search Portal. Neither page names Superfund files as scanned, so check the portal and ask the Environmental Quality Records Center.
