Oklahoma underground injection wells

Two Oklahoma agencies regulate injection wells. The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) oversees the underground injection control activities it regulates: its staff review permit applications, conduct inspections and investigate complaints. DEQ says wells it does not regulate are regulated by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

In a Phase I ESA

ASTM E1527-21 does not name injection well lists among its standard record sources, so no search distance attaches to them under the standard. An injection or disposal well at or near a property still says something about how waste or fluids were handled there. The first question is which agency has the record.

  • DEQ. Its interactive map shows Class I injection wells under its land data.
  • Corporation Commission. The Commission's Induced Seismicity and Underground Injection Control departments, in its Oil and Gas Conservation Division, list a manager for underground injection control and salt water disposal permitting. The Commission publishes Salt Water Disposal Records by county and what it titles Old Well Flood Unit Records. Its Petroleum Storage Tank Division separately lists a Class V injection well permit among its technical forms.

A search of one agency does not answer for the other. For a property with oil and gas history, look at the Commission's records as well as DEQ's.

Getting the file

DEQ's Central Records office holds DEQ's files. Requests go through its online request form, in person at 707 N. Robinson in Oklahoma City, or by phone at 405-702-1188. The Commission takes records requests through the form on its Open Records Requests page, and says most requests are answered within 24 hours.
