Barium: federal lists and state cleanup levels
- CAS 7440-39-3
- 1 federal list
- 3 states
CAS 7440-39-3 is on one of the three federal lists this handbook carries from Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 300 to 399, revised as of July 1, 2025: the toxic chemicals for release reporting (40 CFR 372.65). That list's rows for it are below as the regulation prints them. CAS 7440-39-3 is in the cleanup-level tables of 3 states in this handbook: Florida (Barium (soluble salts)), Pennsylvania (BARIUM AND COMPOUNDS) and Texas (Barium). Each state's numbers are below as its agency prints them. The states run different programs and do not define their values the same way, so a number from one is not the same measure as a number from another. A state that lists the substance under another CAS number, or without one, is not shown here.
Federal lists
Toxic chemicals for release reporting (TRI)
- 40 CFR 372.65(a)
- Revised as of July 1, 2025
40 CFR 372.65, the list of toxic chemicals subject to release reporting, lists CAS 7440-39-3 with an effective date for reporting of 1/1/87.
Table 1 to Paragraph (a): (a) Alphabetical listing.
| Chemical name | CAS No. | Effective date |
|---|---|---|
| Barium | 7440-39-3 | 1/1/87 |
Notes to Table 1 to Paragraph (a): (a) Alphabetical listing., as the regulation prints them
1 The listing of 2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide (CAS No. 10222-01-2) is stayed. The stay will remain in effect until further administrative action is taken.
Florida
- FL DEP
- Chapter 62-777 CTLs
- February 2005
For Barium (soluble salts), DEP's cleanup target level tables print 2,000 ug/L as the groundwater criterion, 120** mg/kg for residential direct exposure to soil and 1,600 mg/kg for soil leachability based on groundwater.

** Direct exposure value based on acute toxicity considerations. This criterion is applicable in scenarios where children might be exposed to soils (e.g. residences, schools, playgrounds)
Pennsylvania
- PA DEP
- Act 2 Statewide Health Standards
For BARIUM AND COMPOUNDS, DEP's Statewide Health Standard tables print 2,000 ug/L for residential groundwater in a used aquifer with TDS up to 2500, 44,000 mg/kg for residential soil direct contact from 0 to 15 feet, and two residential soil to groundwater values for a used aquifer with TDS up to 2500: 200 mg/kg as 100 X GW MSC and 8,200 mg/kg as the generic value.

For Barium, TCEQ's Tier 1 table prints 8,100 mg/kg for TotSoilComb and 440 mg/kg for GWSoilIng (residential soil, 0.5 acre source area), and 2 mg/L for GWGWIng (residential groundwater).

For the federal lists the regulation governs. This page copies the Code of Federal Regulations' annual edition revised as of July 1, 2025, which is kept up to date by the Federal Register; amendments published there since that date are not shown. This page is a reference copy and not a reporting decision. Check the current regulation before relying on a value.
A list with no section on this page has no row with this CAS number. That alone does not put the substance outside the list: the lists also have entries with no CAS number (broad classes, chemical categories, waste streams), which a page filed by CAS number cannot show.
Each agency's own publication governs: its current table, or the published rule where the agency says so. This page is a reference copy and not a cleanup decision. Check each agency's page before relying on a value.
